Media & Technology
"Elearning is the marriage of technology and education, and most often, the instructional designer's greatest role is that of "bridging" concepts between the two worlds" (George Siemens at http://www.elearnspace.org/ Articles/InstructionalDesign.htm_)
Integrating media and other technology tools into courses can make a lesson come alive! As I design courses I try to consider where it might be appropriate to add an image, video, website, game, or other interactive piece in order to help students learn. See below for some examples from my course projects in my courses as well as other interesting ideas for using educational technology.

Interactive Media
Let's start with some examples of interactive media. Below are examples of some learning activities, including matching, ranking, flashcards, simulations, games, and other interactive content. Also be sure to check out the range of activities available through H5P.org. (https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications )
Here is another Interactive organizer from Articulate.
Simulations
Another great way to engage learners in a course is to add a simulation. For the four listed below, feel free to click on the links to get a sample of the program.
Here are several other examples of simulations, games, and graphics that can immerse students in their learning:
- Role Play of an Instructional Designer
- Q&A Game
- Quest Game
- Soccer Penalty Shootout These and many more can be done with Articulate Storyline. See other examples here, here, and here!!!
Videos
Videos are a great way to engage learners in a topic. Below are examples of interviews, TedTalks, news reports, and videos from publisher resources. The video interviews in particular are very powerful, as the subject matter experts can help bring relevance to the course topic.
Consider also video for student assessment. Student video essays, interviews, vlogs, etc. can meet the learning outcomes of your course in a more creative and engaging way. |
